So recently I've been hearing that other countries see American films and are lead to believe we are all... action packed, insane, drama filled sluts!? My friend's tell me that when they travel that people assume since they are American, that they are promiscuous and impulsive. What are your thoughts on this. Why would anyone believe a movie to be an accurate representation of a culture and all their individuals.

I thought sorta the same thing! Though some of us Americans can portray and be alike that witch is found in movies. But that also go's for any other culture and its ppl. and there stereotypes in movies. Though i did get a question from a couple of my Korean student that i help with there English speaking at the UW. "they asked me or told me,"We see ppl with Tattoo's as bad guys or that are part of a bad crowed or group. Four that is how they are portrayed in most US movies. We see you have a tattoo dos this mean you are in a gang or are a bad person?" I was a little stund and at first did not know how to respond. They said that if someone had not introduced me first and they gotten to know me before they new i had tattoo's, they would have never spoken/approached me. WOW! So i can see were the US made movies and how there influence may affect how other cultures see us and put use in different groups and stereotype us. But we also do the same some times.

maybe as a society ppl are attracted to certain things thats why the film companies produce movies that attract that socitiy's viewers (the americans). the producers are going to make what the ppl like and if the ppl like action and promiscuioty then thats what they they. and in many case if ur intersted in certain things u prolly are doing those things or want to do those things.

have you watched rush hour 3? when the cab drivers thinks americans as action packed killing machines lol

and to be honest our society is turning that way. in the 70s and before u can visualize middle schools and highschools playing in the park riding there bikes. now u see elementary girls with make up... middle school girls flaunting all there stuff.... the media and our society promotes sexuality..mtv, celebrities, magazines etc

Interesting topic, I was watching a flick that was portraying Miami life and sometimes it hit it on the nose other times I wondered what galaxy they were from. You can take some generalities but unless you can experience that life firsthand - we will never truly know if it really is artistic liberties or true to form.

The media is never a good reflection of a country as a whole. Yes, there are slutty girls out there, and each generation they get looser and looser. However, just like kdramas are not a true reflection of South Korea and South Koreans, Hollywood is not a true reflection of Americans in the rest of the other 49 states or even Californians.

These people should know better than to judge a nationality due to a certain genre of movie that is put out by that country. If this is the case, should we assume that all Chinese are Kung Fu masters / Triads / Bad-ass cops? Or that english people are all wizards trying to fight off evil? Or that all russians are billionaires with secret plans to destroy the world, and waiting to be stopped by 007? And the examples continue ad infinitum.
