You claimed that wealthier nations have taller people yet you pointed out that northern chinese are very poor yet they have a counterintuitive reputation for being taller than other asians. Clearly affluence doesn't neatly equal to tall people then.

I actually think it's partly because of the diet but not what you imagine. Body growth is linked to protein intake in general. Research has consistently shown that people who eat primarily (lower protein) vegetable diets tend to be short, have their periods later, have less cancer and live longer.

Whereas those who eats mostly meat diets tend to be taller, heavier, have their periods earlier, more cancer, more coronary heart disease and live shorter lives. The more protein and hunter diet is associated with tallness. Whereas the more vegan diet was associated with smaller but longer living people. It seems like you can't have the best of both worlds.

Tho the bad effects of high protein diets were mostly linked to animal proteins. Higher quality verison of plant protein intake was also closely related to tall and heavier people. Meat and dairy consumption is increasing in a wealthier China and that is why you see taller younger people but also a parallel rise in the prevalence of harmful coronary heart diseases.
