So ever since I signed up for Hey-Ai the site seems to crash every so often due to what seems to be server problems. Instead of getting the site I get a notice instead that says:

"Error 503

Service Unavailable"

And then procedes to tell me that the server became overloaded and that I should wait a few minutes before trying again.

This has happened many times over the course of a day.

Not sure if this is anyway related or not but your site also seems to be loading excrutiatingly slow. Any other website I go to loads normally but here it takes a few minutes to load a page.

Both of these problems have been happening on both my laptop and my cell phone so I doubt it is the choice of browser I have.

Please fix?

It's something we have to live with for now.

It's a non-profitable site and such, they can't just throw money at the problem to fix it.

imo, there are a bunch of things that can be done to optimize/reduce server load, but as far as I know, the people maintaining/developing the backend are donating their time as well.

The founder/manager of the site is MIA and I'm not really sure who's taking care of things in the mean run. It's a little disconcerting tbh.

This is a rumor. Caroline is not missing, just very busy with her job as an university language instructor. However, the fact that we are limited with respect to finances as well as time is true. The server is running at its best possible performance considering the time we can spend maintaining it. Of course, plugins could be updated and scripts optimised, but there simply is not enough time available to take care of this in the moment. For example, if we decided to update the messaging system now, we would have to update Joomla itself to the newest version. This in return would force us to update all other plugins to their newest versions, which again would lead to us having have to review our scripts (e.g. the one showing you which users are online) in order to make them work with the updated plugin APIs.

Yeah, that's kind of what I meant by MIA. Didn't mean that she was literally "missing in action".

It's good to see you're doing what you can do.
I was always curious to see how cloudflare would impact a site like this. What are your thoughts? It's free, dead simple, and so far i've only heard good things about it.

CDNs are always good when your site allows their use. However, Joomla would require installation of a CDN plugin, which in return would require updating Joomla... - Anyhow, I’ll forward this suggestion to Kari; let’s see what she thinks about it.
