There are some elements in the books that were absolutely delightful to read, but only in book form. Case and point -- Tom Bombadil, a character who was pleasant to read, but made no sense in a film adaptation. The earlier chapters in Fellowship felt more like a fairy tail than an epic high fantasy, and Tom's appearance was consistent with the novel's pacing. His appearance, however, would have had pacing issues in the films. Overall, I loved Peter Jackson for doing something people 30 years ago thought was impossible.

Apparently, Peter Jackson & Co. are stretching out the single small book The Hobbit into an epic movie trilogy just like LOTR, which I think is just a money scheme, but at what risk? How will Jackson do this, make this small book into an epic movie trilogy??? Each LOTR movie was like 3 hours long, and no doubt each Hobbit movie will be also. The book The Hobbit was only shy of 300 pages. All in all, trilogy or no trilogy it will be another great film franchise and great movies to see, but I'm just afraid of Jackson adding way too many elements of his own into the books, fabricated material not in the original book, you know? From what I remember of the books, Peter Jackson's films are much darker. The books were much more whimsical and playful, I think, throughout...The Hobbit especially. Regardless, I liked the movies.

Great point. I was already surprised when they first announced 2 films, but I really did a "OMG R U SRS" face when they announced a trilogy. From what I've read, Jackson wants to create a connection between the Hobbit and LOTR films... something that was missing in the novels. He's going to grab stuff out of The Silmarillion and add... I don't know... backstory? Flashbacks? Epic old battles? I'm leaning towards to fights and stuff because, well, it's what the audience will expect, and The Hobbit has exactly ONE big fight.

Still, even knowing he's going to make big changes isn't going to deter me from loving the new trilogy. I mean... it's got to be better than the Star Wars prequels, right? Or am I just setting my expectations too low? lol.

Sure, the books! But the film was not so bad too. Better than much film this kind.
