This is an interesting point that I hadn't considered. I do agree that there is some racism at play that helped PSY to become popular while other Kpop artists have not crossed over. But I think agency matters. So I will say that though this is a somewhat stereotypical image of Asian men, it is good that PSY was able to make an inroad into cultivating his own representation. His character in the music video wasn't created by a script writer or manufactured from essentially being made fun of by a TV show. Although it fits a narrow definition of Asian men, it is helping to pave the way toward Asian men having more control over their representation in Western media.

I don't think so.

Psy is more of a hipster in attitude and style. Very carefree and silly but able to reel in the hot chicks. You never really saw Hung surrounded by hot dancers like Hyuna mimicking his dance moves. Hung was more of a freak show or like a strange zoo animal.

I like PSY and a lot of Americans of different background I think like the guy too. Gangnam Style was the biggest pop culture phenomenon of 2012. It averages approx. 6 million YouTube views a day. When I go out to the clubs here in Orlando I still hear it. His brilliant mixture of tongue in cheek humor, catchy dance grooves, cool rapping flow, and humble image in real life helped him achieve the international acclaim and stardom he deserves. B)

William Hung, on the other hand, is weird man.

Bad comparison anyway. Can't believe they were even mentioned in the same thread.

I posted about Psy's popularity recently on here -
/forum/29-music-movies-a-youtube-etc/224437-is-gangnam-style-music-video-really-that-funny

According to wiki about William Hung, he would not have become popular if he was a different ethnicity. For some reason, Asians are not perceived as being attractive and are heavily marginalized in American entertainment industry which makes it difficult for asians that are not like Psy or William Hung to be noticed. There really isn't a recognizable asian in the States other than the usual stereotypical ones. In fact even Jay Chou as Kato in the Green Hornet film seemed to be about negative stereotypes and there was even a mixup on imdb with Jay Chou and John Cho lol -

although that was just probably a simple typing mistake, but there is saying that "all asians look alike" lol. And there are some positive images like John Cho or Lucy Liu but they aren't cast because they're Asian, it's for other reasons, and they're not considered bankable even though they've been in big budget films.

I do not feel Asians are taken too seriously here in the States, this is why I feel even very talented Asian NBA player like Jeremy Lin was ignored by colleges for basketball. After having to gone to Harvard, he got noticed and accepted lol. And Even playing in Harvard he was taunted for his ethnicity and also in the NBA -

I think we would have to see if the follow up record would do as well out he well become a one hit wonder. Then in retrospect we can see if the US is ready to embrace music that is not primarily in English but with catchy hooks
