For me it seems that way. While I overall prefer a happy ending and closure, movies that have an ambiguous ending, and/or bittersweet ending gives me a feeling that is different in a "good" way. They make me think a lot deeper and I usually have to watch them again many times before im done with them.
On the other hand when im watching a movie for the first time I kind of dread the possibility that it will end in such a way, not giving closure and leaving you a bit gloomy. Cause assuming the actual movie is also of high quality I know I will waste a lot of time thinking about it.

Im talking about movies like Memento, The sixth sense, Gattaca, Inception etc, they all leave it somewhat open to interpretation and are bittersweet depending on how you look at it. To compare, Life of Pi which I saw recently was also ambiguous and had a deep message but the ending is still a happy one regardless how you look at it, so it didnt move me in the same way.

What do you guys think? anyone else feel like this?

1. Miracle Mile
2. Se7en
3. The Mist

to name a few of the anti-climatic movies that left me feeling depressed.

Depressing movies are moving? Not necessarily I think because depression usually isn't very moving.
Movies like Schindler's List, Anne Frank etc. though while reflecting death aren't necessarily depressing as they still give us hope that mankind has some good left in them.

Maybe "moving" was the wrong word to use.. what I meant was that it is usually movies that are somewhat depressing that I find difficult to stop thinking about, assuming it was an overall good movie as well

In a way American History X was super moving, god I cried like a lil bish at the end. and the scene where derek is in the shower, having a flashing back with him and danny as kids on the beach.. like the big brother always gonna be there for his best friend and youngest brother.. idk.. gets me every time. incredibly moving and just intense.

Yeah American History X is a great movie, but it didnt stick with me that long after I had seen it. Probably because the ending leaves very little to interpretation.

Pan's Labyrinth is another example, a touching movie with a bittersweet and cryptic ending.

lol the shower scene? You mean the part where he gets raped?

Writers always do that, it's a cheap shot really. Get you to connect with the characters then kill them off to tug at your heart strings. I think Tangled, Beauty and the Beast and even 50 First Dates were pretty moving movies with no depressing endings. Though Inception was the one that made me think the most.

But then again, 'moving' usually means some brave, selfless act or a heart wrenching moment. So there's bound to be a few depressing moments here and there.

lol no, the part where they take down all the nazi stuff, and he's in the shower at their apartment. he has a flashback to a time when there was no pain, time of innocence. CREYS!

its nothing more than hollywood tricks - creating scenes that are totally opposite of what viewers are expecting and always leaving the viewers wanting for more in the end.

I prefer more realistic endings. Rather than fake happiness.

Although these movies are not scifi or mindbenders per se, the most depressing are fictionalized adaptations of reality that paint a grim picture of how the world really works. JFK, and Syrianna are two examples. Essentially insider accounts they are movies that shatter naive idealism, and cut through years of propaganda shaped thinking.
