Otaku is actually a negative term from what I collect. It's connected in being a hikkomori and media has labeled "otaku" as bad. If any of you guys have watched lucky star there's actually a part there where they discuss about "otakus". Genshiken is quite an open manga about their culture, if you guys are really curious about it. I love anime and manga(Manga especially) but I never label myself as one.

I like anime but it was never my thing to go out of my way and proudly badge myself as an "otaku". If you like to call yourself one then oh well! Just not my thing.

@ OP:
Czesc,
Here in hey-ai, you're welcome to be whatever you want to be.
If in your own country, authorities don't let you be what you are, then you should try to run out.
But, last time I heard, Poland was a free country.

Otaku is a derogatory term in Japan. Its used to describe someone who has an unhealthy obsession with something, including but not limited to, Anime/manga/video games. Aside from the typical stereotype of a shut-in who lives in their parents basement, who has no friends, no job, no life and no future, there is also the stereotype of Otaku being possibly dangerous due to "The Otaku Murderer". No it wasn't someone who went around killing Otaku. It was a very sick man who brutally murdered little girls, obsessed over their dead bodies, obsessed over the families. He would constantly call his victims family. Even went as far as to send one of the families a piece of the little girl. By little girl I mean, his victims were no older than 7. The media labeled him "The Otaku Murderer" because he was obsessed with the bodies and killing. So, to have an Otaku in your family was something they didn't talk about, they were the black sheep. While now, Anime and manga have been trying to ease some of the negative stereotype, its still something they don't like there.
