Yes, this is going down. Why? I have an extra day off so I'm bored.

I'm very split on this song. On one hand it promotes self confidence and being ok with your size, but on the other it's promoting being comfortable with a body that's inherently unhealthy. Being extremely skinny, like the image portrayed by some models and photoshopped media, isn't healthy either.

Countless studies already correlated overweight and health risk. US is second fattest country after Mexico. According to CDC , the leading cause of death in the US currently is heart disease (from all that unhealthy fat from food clogging up the heart).

The best solution would probably be legislative changes that put more focus on healthy school lunches and more education on fitness and healthy eating in the school curriculum. That won't ever happen though, because billion dollar fast food and soft drink industries got congress by the balls.

  • Correlation does not imply casuality. Fat does not simply "clog up" in the arteries as many people think. Actually, atherosclerosis is a dynamic process that involves other factors that play an equally, if not more important role, such as inflammation and the immune system.

  • In the US, heart disease overtook infectious disease as the leading cause of death as early as the 1940s, before the fast food era.

  • Even in ancient cultures, the atherosclerotic clotting of arteries is a common phenomenon. According to a 2013 report in The Lancet , atherosclerosis had been found in several pre-modern populations including hunter-gatherers. It is not a modern disease. Out of 137 mummies, 34% of them had arteries clogged with calcified plaque.

  • The removal of saturated fats in our diets to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease has paradoxically increased its risk .

  • The bottom line is that if you want to lead a healthy lifestyle, do not simply avoid saturated fats and fast food. Switch to a vegetarian diet instead , because there are more benefits and the evidence to support it is more conclusive

Thank you. Altho the link you posted did talk about the correlation between trans fat and heart disease, which was the type of bad fat that I was talking about. It is interesting to know that the process is more of an inflammatory action.

I will say I'm not a fan of this whole fat positive movement that's going on because it's promoting obesity as "beautiful", and that's dangerous.
However it kinda rubs me the wrong way when skinny girls complain that songs about having curves are discriminating against them. (Which idk if you know but that is what's happening with that song lately). Let's wait until curvy women are socially accepted and Kate Upton isn't being called "fat" and then maybe you can have a leg to stand on. Skinny girls have been shining for years and fat girls have been feeling undesirable. As it is now, thin women are still highly preferred by the majority to overweight ones, so just let the big girls have their time to shine...
As long as they're not really on the very unhealthy side I don't see a problem with it. The girl in the video doesn't look like her health is at risk.

I agree that many people are overreacting to this song and being offended for almost no reason. This song is a nice break from all the constant barrage of image standard by the media. It just feels like one of those "it's not really all good technically, but it's rare enough that it wouldn't hurt". More than anything, it reminded me the overweight and unhealthy food problem the country has.
