Thailand’s Health Promotion Foundation has teamed up with ad agency BBDO Bangkok to create this ingenious new plate design, as part of an effort to address the country’s obesity problem

‘AbsorbPlate’ has 500 small dimples to catch and retain grease. BDDO claims it will remove seven millilitres of oil from a meal, equating to around 30 calories per plateful.

“Thai food is delicious but sometimes very greasy,” says the ad spot for the plate released last month. “These greasy dishes cause Thais to have the 2nd highest obesity rate in South East Asia, and create a prevalence of health problems such as high cholesterol and high blood pressure.

“Unhealthy eating behaviour is hard to change, and most Thai people go for what's delicious. How can we help Thai people eat healthier without changing their regular meal? We decided to tackle how they eat their food.” The agency says the plate in inspired by the surface of a sponge, with the holes separating excess oil from food before people eat it.

It’s been described as an “effortless way to eat healthier” by the Future Innovative Thailand Institute, and a “game-changing innovation” by Dr Surin Pitsuwan, former Secretary-General of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations.

The Thai Health Promotion Foundation is an autonomous state agency established in 2001 by the Health Promotion Foundation Act. It’s acts to “inspire, motivate, coordinate, and empower individuals and organizations in all sectors for the enhancement of health promotive capability as well as healthy society and environment.”

I keep questioning about this plate :hmm:
Does this plate is spilled free? Because all the grease/oil would come out the plate and make the floor or any surface dirty.

not a bad plate but 30 calories is a joke. at the end of the day its all about the healthy nutrition. its all about what you eat and what you use (ingredient wise) to prep your meal.

i would sell it to lots of people just to take their money, because if they think something like this is a solution to all their problems, they don't need that extra cash anyway.

i can think of lots of products where people want the easy way out without having to do anything (or have any self-control).

they were gonna tax coca-cola drinks because america's too fat, if i remember correctly. i can see why a government wants to help its people or save costs on medical care but you're asking crack addicts to put down their crack which ain't gonna happen. j/k
