Those who are not familiar with American culture are usually mistaken on the idea of gun ownership, but guns can't be completely banned in America and shouldn't be. It's just impossible considering the history and culture of the US. Plus, in reality it's not like anybody can buy guns and carry them around freely.

Meh... I have mixed feelings on this area.

I freely admit: I have no skill handling a gun and no desire to carry one around (or even leave in my house). I don't like hunting or shooting at the range.

Legally, the US constitution allows the "bearing of arms". While scholars can argue whether that applies to militia vs automatic rifles vs ordinary citizens, the likely outcome will be continued legality of guns.

However, if I were designing a country from scratch, I'd think hard about allowing everyone free reign over guns. At the very least, impose strict standards, testing, and wait times for guns. Limit the # of rounds, caliber, and type of weapon. Tax bullets like crazy.

In rural areas of the US gun ownership makes a lot of sense.

There people cannot wait patiently for police to arrive when help is needed.

Only they can protect themselves. Also, in cases of national emergency or a total breakdown of law and order where the police force is annihilated or absent due to desertion, you are extremely vulnerable if you think people will behave and they have guns and you do not.

Assault rifles and whatever weapons you can get your hands on will probably save you and your family from the violent criminals out there. Think LA riots of the early 1990s.

We should not have them because too many of us are violent, crazy, and disregarding of human life. The number of criminal gun-related murders and injuries now outweighs the benefits. Private gun ownership would be ok if our culture was different.

Phasing them out would indeed be difficult, but there is some way to do it while minimizing the risk to vulnerable people who use guns responsibly (for self-defense).
