Turn Off the Social Media was created by MagicMarker

Social media has become a time sink. We plug hours of productive time into the abyss, exposing ourselves to advertisements and subtle social pressures. One of the most pernicious things is seeing stories or pictures of someone else having a good time. It makes us wonder why we are not doing that currently, despite the fact that people generally want to present themselves in the best/most glamorous light online. Also, someone may only go on vacation once a year but to another looking through her news feed, it seems that everyone she knows is off in an exotic location.

It's just like 4 Hour Workweek said. Turn off the email and phone. Get away from information overload.

I do highly agree that it is a huge time waster. Nothing wrong with using it, but we get so absorbed into it that it becomes a time waster. Honestly, you can tell who has an addictive personality based on how obsessed they are about it.

I mostly just want to see responses----but I waste time waiting for them....
Now that I have my netflix, I am more easily pulled away and back to enjoying my movies without really caring what people are doing and what they have to think about what I'm doing---who cares? the movie is on....*pushes life stress away for 2 hours*

Deactivating my Facebook, Twitter, etc for over a month was one of the best things I could do for myself.
Seemed I got more done, and figured out that those who really cared stayed in touch.
Also, it was nice to get away from everyone's bragging.
I plan on doing it again very soon.

You know what the worst part of all of it is---

people saying they have "no time"!

Well than, move on and make new friends seems to be the only options----that or me having no life because people are easily distracted into having "no time" for anything. Going to movies alone is far more constructive than waiting for a "yes, I have time next week". Those never materialize much---usually, I end up missing out on the movie entirely, and being a good girl, I go buy it on DVD.

Technology gives us so much time to do our other "chores" that we seriously DO have time for people!

I found the more I spent on social media the less social I became, it was pretty scary. I try to turn the email and phone off at least once a week.

Huh yeah, I can see that being so
you feel like you already "contact" them often---well, that and simply think you need to be on there more than you need to be out in person
those "addicting" facebook games, as well.......except I'm not addicted to them.

yes I agree with this thread. I'm now going to check my facebook messages once a week. I have them filtered in a folder so I can see if anyone important has contacted me. I'm China so having no access has been great!

Weibo is problem for me...alot of my colleagues and someome dear to my heart is also on it...although it is time wasting.

These websites aren't real life. Although good for keeping in touch when you're miles away from home.

I have decided to quit weibo and focus on Chinese language homework and writing postcards :-)
