Cuz they took a chunk of Ireland with them. That makes them great rather than lesser or just plain Britain. Now wait until Scotland leaves...

Britain is just great, it's something we're all supposed to accept without question. I could list the reasons why I think Britain is great, but I know it still won't do it any justice ;)

Some Aussies have more loyalty to the Empire than the fledgling republic.

I'm pretty sure it's just a shortened down version of 'Greater' Britain.

The same term is used to describe whole counties/cities like London:

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greater_London

en.wikipedia.org/wik...ater_Manchester

i.e. referring to all parts of a constituent area.

Britain did used to be truly Great though:

History Lesson:
Britain derives from the Latin word Britannia the Roman empire invaded in 1 BC it's ancient name is Albion (Greek). (Britannia was personified as a Goddess and was used on coinage and as a patron until the end of 19th Century)
Britannia is just the name for England and Wales as the Romans never conquered Caledonia(Scotland)
The name Great Britain was used in 1707 when Queen Anne politically reunited England, Scotland and Wales hence the Great as Scotland was included.
The name Great Britain only includes the England, Scotland and Wales. The official name of the country is the The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland :) Thanks!
