Queen Elizabeth I ruled England & Wales but when she died in 1603 she had no children and the nearest relative was King James VI of Scotland. He was crowned king of England & Wales so the country was united. It wasn't until 1707 where the country was POLITICALLY united (England Wales & Scotland had separate governments) by Queen Anne
There had been three attempts in 1606, 1667, and 1689 to unite the two countries by Acts of Parliament,but it was not until the early 18th century that both governments agreed to be united.

Actually I'm an avid history geek. Studied the History of U.K throughout school from the Romans up until present day it is a passionate subject of mine.
