When the horse's brain receives a message that the hooves are too cold, shunts in the vascular areas of his feet open to allow the blood to move from arteries directly to the larger veins, bypassing capillaries and the chance to cool down. After the feet have warmed sufficiently, the shunts close again to restore blood flow to the capillaries. A horse's tail and ears have similar shunting systems.
Redden adds that he's seen feet improve in colder climates: "Snow has tremendous healing properties for some reason. Even feet that freeze repeatedly seem to have a healthier, cleaner appearance." - Equus

yes, that's right snow and ice are good insulators, that's why when your refirgerator evap coils frost up the tempurature rises inside, hence the reason for defrost.

the moisture that freezes on the coimes from the food and the water vapor entering as you open the refrig door

(not a new fact I llearned but something to share w ya'll) :P
