A Renaissance painting reveals how breeding changed watermelons

Over time, we've bred watermelons to have the bright red color we recognize today. That fleshy interior is actually the watermelon's placenta, which holds the seeds. Before it was fully domesticated, that placenta lacked the high amounts of lycopene that give it the red color. Through hundreds of years of domestication, we've modified smaller watermelons with a white interior into the larger, lycopene-loaded versions we know today.

It seemed so unimaginable 4 months ago. But at some point I stopped hoping for more time, I only hoped for the time left to be as happy and painless as possible.

I am so grateful for the time I have spent with my mum. And I'm grateful she didn't suffer for too long.

yuck, that just makes both versions of them look and sound creepy now. the old ones look strange and the new ones are all placenta. but, that's very interesting that the painting shows it.
