I'm sick of cars, smartphones, gas-powered leafblowers, noise and traffic everywhere all the time.

I have thought about living in a less-developed area, a place where not everyone owns a car and a mobile phone, where the pace of life is slower. Rural Taiwan was my first pick, but Taiwan is not a cheap place to live and I've heard I'd still need a scooter to get anywhere.

I've also thought about Vietnam but I know very little about this country so far.

Any suggestions? Some place warm and safe for a single female with a low cost of living. I don't need a modern home, grocery stores, or a lot of other amenities. Running water, basic electricity, plenty of fruits/veggies, and a way to bike into a larger city when I need more.

Hi Luka13,

I think it will be more complicated to travel to a third world country to live that way you are describing, then to just move to a more rural community in America. To move to another country, you need money to move, to live, and to pay all the government fees paperwork processing fees. Depending on the country and what type of visa you can get some countries have age limits or require you to have a skill set to come and or even a certain amount in your bank account. Also moving to a remote area/rural area where you do not speak the language may make it hard to find employment as you would be competing with the locals. Not saying this is impossible, just saying what you are looking for maybe a couple of states away. :)

The problem with rural areas in the United States is that they are full of armed rednecks and cars are essential for getting around. I'm trying to get away from guns and cars.

I have a small stable income that does not depend on employment. Also I am great at learning languages and I would start studying before I moved.

Seems they still cherish the family tradition of hunting back slaves. Scary stuff...

Yes, the current atmosphere in America is scary. Not everyone has the access to move to another country. I am thankful that my job is needed in other countries and I can get a work visa. I am keeping Canada and Australia in mind. I hate the cold but Canada is closer and may be quicker to transfer my credentials. Australia seems perfect but I think their work visa process may take longer.

You could always look for jobs as a native English speaking teacher.

@ Luka13:
Maybe, you should first visit a few other cities in various countries & pick which one will match what you look for.
Mpst European cities are walkable & don't require owning a car... Some are even restriting the use of cars inside city limits.
And there is still an easy to find Asian population in any European cities. :)

I'm not going to visit cities randomly; first I'll research, that's the point of this thread.

I have a cold intolerance so most of Europe is out. Also I'm looking for cheap and low-tech, not just walkable. I literally want to live in a town that has less modern technology, just like it says in the original post.

And I'm not trying to go to Asia specifically to find Asian people. We have a large Asian population right here in the U.S.
