And why not? if they could legitimately fining every single person who download movies/musics illegally then i bet they would...

But they don't because teenagers and kids also download them a lot and it would ruin their lives...

Over here we sometime get street with no "speed signs" and instead we get "speed cameras" lol..Just by doing this they are making billions...

Why would a musician want to fine/jail their own fans? :pinch:

Musicians don't want this...but the cops do...

If you're a musician then you obviously don't want other people to steal your musics and make many versions of it..And if you register for the copyright protection then the FBI have the right to catch anyone who's downloading your musics/movies

Honestly though, i'm very positive that nearly everyone on this site is a pirate lol.

EDIT: On a side note, i don't even think they make that much money anymore lol.

And no..the internet porn industry is blooming...

Honestly, the way I see it:

illegal downloading -> exposure to more artists -> finding more artists you like -> going to these artists' concerts -> buying these artists' merch -> supporting the artists more in the future

There are a bunch of musicians I download to see if I like. The ones I do grow fondness for I support by purchasing their records/shirts/buying concert tickets/spreading the word. So I guess the illegal download thing is a catch 22. Gets you more exposure, but might not get you as many record sales.

As an artist, I prefer buying the physical albums once I discover a musician I like because I enjoy the whole experience of reading through the liner notes and looking at the album artwork.

If I really want a song - I convert youtube to an mp3 file - and it goes to itunes! So good :0)
however I do like to buy the real albums definitely....

I'm kind of OCD about cover art/cover flow so its nice to buy music from iTunes sometimes rather than having to tag the torrented music and add the cover art yourself

I think there was some study that found pirated music = increased sales. Also something about the artists making more on touring dates, etc. Probably why some artists release albums for free.

I think streaming it exposes the artists work---but downloading it does not. All you do is put it on your own personal collection, and-maybe-let your friends hear it.

That is not exposure. If you are mass-sharing it, that is basically worse than downloading it for yourself.

On youtube channels, we can easily share the videos, and we don't actually own the tracks---but we can still see if we like it.

I used to download---well I download anime singles still, I'll be honest, and maybe the odd obscure album .....but generally I pay for my albums. I pay for a lot more than what I download these days---as for my anime, I download what is not available as translated dvds. Funimation is seriously crazy-affordable now compared to the costs anime were at when I first saw them in stores. There is no excuse to NOT buy your fave anime for $30 by the time it hit's the super savings collections.

I don't believe music should be free.
I believe they should give you a free sample, maybe a free single, but not a free album.
It costs money to make cds, it costs them money to tour ,it also costs them money to repair and replace, and even to have, instruments.
Basically, by asking for free money, you are not supporting their music.
It costs money to rent venues----to create fan merch--to pay for the album cover artist, to stay at hotels....
They need to make a living.

As a visual artist, I understand that term "starving artist" when people are unwilling to pay for the effort and time you put into something---something you want to make a career out of. People want everything free, and have 0 idea what it takes to make this stuff happen.
