Great Gatsby -- I told myself I wasn't allowed to see the film UNTIL I appreciated the literary work.

I had to appreciate that literary work two times in school. You should complain to your teachers for not making you read it.

Was reading Hamlet, only parts of it. I don't particularly enjoy reading Old English... too baroque... but Shakespeare's use of various literary devices is just unparalleled. I mean, c'mon, it's Shakespeare. Reading Shakespeare is a chore-and-a-half because you simply can't enjoy it without reading the annotations, unless you dig the musical quality of the writing. Same goes with Poe, he uses a lot of obscure allusions to other works of literature in his work, as well as works of art, and musical pieces... you gotta look that shit up and it takes away from the reading process... so you have to reread it after you've taken in all the annotations and stuff the first time around. Those two are my all-time favorite writers, btw: Shakespeare and Poe. Hemingway was good, too, in a straight-forward, no-bullshit kind of way, but Shakespeare (Romantic movement) and Poe (Gothic movement) are THE MASTERS, imo. Then again, difficult to compare and contrast those three dudes--different times, different eras, different styles.

Edit: James Joyce is a beast at the craft, too. Very difficult read, but rewarding if you stick with it and try to search for the deeper meanings. Different eras these guys lived in. Their works are timeless windows into the past.

I'm reading Lords and Ladies by Terry Pratchett, a kind-of-sort-of "A Midsummernight's Dream"-parody. Very funny, but also sort of thought-provoking at times.
