Saw something about Avril Lavigne and Hello Kitty trending on the side of FB feed and decided to Youtube it (official video was taken down soon after release).

Perception of Asian pop culture in the mind of "typical" westerner?

To be honest, it's *more* toned down than some legitimate J-pop I've seen.

Then again, they're mostly just being weird, not stereotyping themselves.

But from my point of view, there's no real... negative/intentionally harmful meaning coming from the song. It's just taking a perception of a fashion world/a music world and putting an American industry spin on it. It's just a different cultural flavoring, maybe?

I've seen a few K-pop videos where the bands will dress up in cowboy hats and iconically "American" clothes, but I don't consider it an ethical faux pas. It doesn't offend me when Japanese bands use poorly accented English in their songs. But then this is coming from a white person who hasn't been historically mocked or parodied in U.S. culture. If I were, it might enter into a long list of, "You're not respecting this. You're just using it and marketing off it and making fun of it."

I just didn't sense the malice. To me, that's most important: was there ill-intent when they made this? I don't think there was. But maybe I'm missing a bigger, deeper picture that has less to do with intent and more to do with subconscious racial/cultural perceptions that need to be changed.

I'm rambling. Long story short: I don't see what's wrong with it.

The fact that actual Japanese stuff are probably more weird did come across my mind. I guess it's more of a personal wtf moment since I did enjoy some of her older stuff and now it's just coming off as dumb and attention grabbing.

Weird, but amusing.
