Well, at least I got my Kaiju fix in Pacific Rim. Still I'm interesting in watching it though.

Okay, I'm not really a Godzilla fan. I do like these kinds of films every now and then, but I'm in no way any expert, but I feel like I wanna talk anyway. You are free to criticize me. I don't see your point in doing that, since it's just my taste, but whatever you wanna do
And I will be spoiling quite a lot, so I'm putting it all in a spoiler.
1. Maybe it's just me, but I really didn't feel the love between the son and his wife. At all. The kisses and stuff were just... nope. Didn't feel real at all. The wife was really cute though ^^
2. They kind of wanted too much. The tragic family story, the love story, the kids in danger. I don't know, it was just too much emotional stuff.
3. He switched locations all the time. And as a person who's never been to Cali, it was just confusing with all these location switches. I mean, I know San Fran and LA, but there were A LOT of places.
4. The music. It didn't fit. I kept noticing it and I'm not a person who often does that, since they just blend in with the feeling you get. So no, it was not a good thing. Awkward.
5. Speaking of awkward. The close-ups on the monsters' genital organs and the eskimo kiss or whatever they were doing just before they mated. No. Just no. This was the worst. This was what made me look at the rest of the movie critically. I probably wouldn't think Godzilla was silly if it wasn't for this point.
6. I did like the fighting scenes. They could have made it a bit more bloody, but hey, it was fine.
7. And yes, I did cry a bit in the beginning when the mom died. The beginning was awesome.
8. And I did really like the first half of the movie! I thought it would be awesome in total. But point 5 ruined it for me.
9. Safe zone. SO COOL!

Spoilers
One thing that bothered me was how many kids were in there and how they kept "putting them in danger" to produce tension. The scene with the mom was really sad. He closed the door, ok, sucks, but then with her at the window was just really powerfully sad.
The main character should have been the dad and his revenge story really, but I guess they need the young son there to do all the military stuff. They tried to incorporate too much of the human story into a monster disaster film.
I do like the theme that the military keep coming up with these plans and they keep backfiring and gone to shit, and they end up having to just let him do his thing.
Did not... see monster genitals other than the eggs in the belly area.
The parachute scene, the fire shooting scene, and where they were on the railroad bridge hiding from the monster were worth the admission price by themselves.
There are definite flaws, room for improvement and expectation for these shouldn't be high to start with. IMAX 3D that maximize the effects is a good way to enjoy this movie for a thoughtless monster disaster flick that it was. I was too busy to notice or get bothered by things when my seat and entire body were trembling from the scream of the monsters.

Haha, yeah, eggs, genitals, whatever
It was a close-up to their crotch where they had a glowing sack. It was just a really weird shot in my opinion ^^
But I agree with the other things you stated as well

It's amusing how they still carry rifles with them throughout the movie as if those will do anything.

My two cents,
"Godzilla" from the 90s was a good summer blockbuster flick for its time, as I'm sure Godzilla flicks form the early days of cinema were mind-blowing in their time. From the creators of Independence Day. From what I remember it was action-packed but with humor for kids.
Not sure about this one, tho. Just looks like more recycled material with update CGI, trailers made it look dead serious. But that first "teaser" trailer with the giant gaps/holes in the skyscrapers got me hyped tho. That was a few months back.
Haven't had a movie really "blow my mind" in a while, visually. I was expecting that from "Avatar" when I saw it premiere a few years ago... remember the whole 3D thing started out?... but I just got a headache from the experimental phase the 3D was in at the time (a few minutes into the movie I had to take off my 3D glasses), and the CGI just got really "all Disney" on me. Looked like a cartoon after a while. I lost interest real quick in the story as well.
Last movie that struck me visually was, it kinda bombed but, "Immortals". It carried on the whole "300" look and feel. Over the top slo-mo fight scenes and stuff (started with Matrix?). Dark lighting cinematography, and shit.
What more can they do with it, CGI? The event horizon/inter-dimensional travel sequence in 2001: A Space Odyssey still blows my mind. Nothing will ever truly top that for me visually. I'm fucking ranting.

Is it just me, or did this leave theaters very quickly? I didn't even get a chance to see it.

The movie was a tease to be honest, every time something great was about to happen, they'd go to something else! It wasn't a bad movie, but it wasn't that good either. The mutos were my favorite, I think I actually like them more than I liked godzilla. Me and my friends were sitting in the theatre and could't help, but giggle a little about godzilla's design because dang, Dem hips though! Stayed true to old godzilla design hahaha
