And dubstep is derived from dub plates... Trap is produced using DAWs just like all other electronic music. If it had lyrics it would be considered a type of Hip Hop. Because it requires no human intervention save for mouse/keyboard input it is universally considered bad EDM

EDIT: Seems like I upset someone into thinking that the only requirement for a song to be electronic dance music is the use of an audio workstation... Not sure if it is due to my sarcastic tone or just the result of a user cherry picking things for the sake of argument. Obviously I didn't anticipate to generate this type of frustration among a certain individual or I would have wrote an entire chapter to showcase the differences between using a DAW for mixing/mastering vs using a DAW as a primary means of song creation...
Yes trap is essentially hip hop. However the stuff they play around here is light on lyrics and heavy on the sub bass. Plain old hip hop wouldn't go down too well with the crowds that frequent rooftop bars in the summer. This "southern hip hop" began dominating the clubs around here in 2013 and I've been upset with the scene ever since. I don't look up definitions and only draw from real life experience to internally label something. To me It's trap, the crap you listen to while you wait. If that upsets you then I apologize profusely. Please also tell me how Dimmu Borgir isn't black metal but symphonic metal... because, you know, that matters.

I certainly hope that clears up everything because I'm kind of sick of being attacked on a thread who's purpose is to spread our love of music. Thanks.

...you're joking right?
Dubstep is not even considered EDM. UK Garage is inherently different from EDM by lineage. Same goes with Trap. In electronic music, genres are differentiated by BPM and rhythms — saying that anything produced using DAWs is "just like all other electronic music" is incredibly asinine and naive. What, Diplo spun it at a fest so it must be EDM? lol
Rae Sremmurd doesn't have lyrics? Gucci Mane? Migos?

I don't know who Gucci Mane, Diplo, or anyone else you named is. Sounds like some mainstream stuff. Most of the stuff I listen to is Brazilian considering they have made some of the best Electro house in the last 5 years.
BPM is not a great gauge for what genre you are listening to. For example DnB can be 180+ bpm or as low as 115 bpm (slower than house at 128). There's a lot of factors that go into defining a sub-genre. It's usually something that people argue about when they have nothing better to do. Instead of enjoying the music for what it is they sit there are tell you how wrong you are for "falsely" labeling something. It's really not something you should be concerned with. PLUR...
EDM is an umbrella term also. It's not really something to nitpick over. I've seen the clubs change. 15 years ago it was Hardstyle, 10 years ago it was Trance, 5 years ago it was Electro, today it's Trap and Dubstep. Furthermore, it's actually easier to type EDM than say "EDM + dubstep + trap" or "club music".
I don't even consider Trap and Dubstep music. But the rest of the world does and that's reason enough to mention how much I dislike it.

You're absolutely right. Instrumentation and song structure are also important elements to consider when gauging the genre of electronic music, whether for DnB (which I consider trash music) or for trap (which you consider trash music).
And yeah, musicology is a totally pointless subject — it has no real life application (like deconstructing music, studying historical trends, innovating music theory) and is definitely best left to people who have nothing better to do than to argue!
Sorry I called you out on your bullshit. Let's go back to enjoying our music and gloss over the fact that you titled this thread "Let's talk about EDM"!

Really dislike the whole pop trance and pop house edm that they are trying to push out these days , especially in the Trance scene.
Favorite producers? Armin Van Burren , Kshmr, Tiesto , Andrew rayel , Klingande , and lots of really small DJs in the trance scene.

i hovered around mostly progressive trance and progressive house producers like Gabriel & Dresden, tail-end of Sasha & Digweed, ATB up to "Marrakech", Second Sun, Tiesto, Christopher Lawrence. All the up-and-coming ones that had residencies in Ibiza, played the Miami fests, and dominated the NY club scene. Had a small fling with Infected Mushroom, Megara & DJ Lee, and flirted with balearic beat via DJ Shah. By the time i began listening to Sander van Doorn and Armand van Helden I was pretty tired of EDM, but on the other hand I had stayed with The Chemical Brothers and Daft Punk. There was also a short stint with '90s eurodance, mostly because my friends really enjoyed Initial-D.
Starting a new relationship with my current girlfriend pushed me towards electro-house around 2008, and I moved backwards to Mr. Oizo, Soulwax, Felix da Housecat, Simian Mobile Disco, and Erol Alkan comp albums before the French house breakthrough of Justice, along with Germany's Boys Noize and all the great dirty electro that proceeded. This was also the time that I got into trip-hop groups like Faithless, Massive Attack, Thievery Corporation, Second Person, etc.
more recently been riding the UK garage and chillwave trends, and discovering local experimental hiphop (which ofc falls under EDM because they use DAWs):
