My journey into electronic music started in 1997. I heard Daft Punk's Da Funk on the radio and it hooked me. I immediately went out and bought their debut album "Homework" with my dad's money.
Over the next few years I was sorely disappointed with the direction electronic music was moving. Everything was beginning to sound the same. Moby and Fatboy Slim dominated the media and I just wasn't feeling it. At the time happy hardcore, gabber, and hardstyle were taking over the underground scene here in Detroit.
Being in Detroit had it's benefits though. Guys like Plastikman (Richie Hawtin) really excited the party scene here in the 90s. Unfortunately for me, I don't really enjoy techno... When I say that to people I get weird looks due to the overwhelming pride my city has in calling itself "the birthplace of techno". What I really enjoyed was Chicago house...
I remember the first time I heard Flat Beat by Mr. Oizo. Truly a joke of a song but nonetheless very catchy. Electro had hit me full force and it would dominate my listening experience until present day. I was shocked when I heard the song remixed while listening to 16-bit's old EP.
Sometime around 2008/2009 I started to take notice of the Brazilian scene which was 10 fold better than anything we had going on here in the states. Now groups like Darth and Vader and Felguk are in constant rotation on my devices. These guys destroy cities with this stuff.
The effect it had on the entire North American continent was incredible. Seemingly overnight we had all kinds of insane producers like Lazy Rich popping up, bringing with them their own unique style that would be an influence to nearly every musician in the electro house scene moving forward to present day. Fun fact, I actually met Lazy Rich and he's a very calm and polite individual. His music on the other hand...
I'll post my genesis of DnB another day... that will take a very long time.

while i was getting my jollies off European EDM, i was simultaneously fixated on Japanese culture. going over the early 2000's, a handful of Japanese labels, in particular Avex Trax, pushed electronic music really hard. i remember enjoying Ayumi Hamasaki's trance and eurobeat remixes way more than her original productions — tbh it was Ayumi Hamasaki who got me into EDM. a bunch of other up-and-coming EDM producers did collabs with Ayumi through Avex — imo the collabs with Namie Amuro, BoA, Do As Infinity, etc. really propelled EDM's international fame and innovated electronic music in the East.
early 2000's was also the time that rhythm games gained widespread acclaim, and from games like Beatmania and DDR i was able to discover artists like DJ Yoshitaka, kors k, DJ Taka, Sota Fujimori, Orange Lounge, and more.
these songs were me in my musical infancy, and while i don't listen to this kind of music anymore, i still get some nostalgic feels, and i do think it was an important experience that shaped my understanding and appreciation for music.
thanks to Myspace, Youtube, and /mu/ I was able to work backwards and discover '90s shibuya-kei, listening to essentials like Pizzicato Five, Yellow Magic Orchestra, Shinichi Osawa (fka Mondo Grosso), and Flipper's Guitar. YMO in particular was integral to the creation of chiptune, glitch, and the future of shibuya-kei like in later-era Capsule, Saori@destiny, immi, etc. nowadays they got a lot of sugared up techno-pop like Perfume, Kyary Pamyu Pamyu, substance, Tempura Kidz, etc. who get remixed, but there are still some good gems that fall outside of the conventional Japanese aesthetic.

Go alone. As long as you aren't terribly antisocial you'll meet new friends.

I've lately been listening to a lot of chillstep, orchestral dubstep, cognition enchancers, trance (DJ Skript is my favorite), Infected Mushrooms, and most artists from Ektoplazm (music portal - psychedelic-progressive, forest, -tech, -dub, -step, etc), oh and electroswing <3 If I could Lindy hop to it, I'll listen to it
