I'm basing my next big life decision on this reading, so don't mess me up here.
Hi Thesaurusrex. I'm really sorry this reply is so late, though it seems you have made your big decision regarding your (ex-)boyfriend and your future and I sincerely hope that everything has worked out for the best.
These readings I do are fun but I also feel a bit of pressure in trying to be sensitive, comprehensive and insightful. In some cases, I have to watch or re-watch the movies in order to get an adequate feel for what the other person might be responding to. In your case, I had not seen The Fall but I downloaded it after watching the trailer I and thoroughly enjoyed it (as I did your other selections) so for that I thank you!
I also want to ask: are you a writer or a caregiver?
I would wager that you have an almost preternatural capacity for empathy as well as an acute sensitivity to small, seemingly insignificant moments and gestures. I'm not saying you let your emotions completely run away with you: only that you see and appreciate things in people and in daily life that most would overlook. Like someone with an emotional metal-detector in their head. And that these small moments tend to impact you deeply.
Gilbert Grape and Kiki are both wonderful examples of a kind of filmmaking that I would say is gradually becoming extinct. Although both films deal with (marginally) sensational characters (a 400 pound mother, a retarded boy, a young witch), they also deal with these characters in the most matter-of-fact way, generously allowing us to get to know them over time and through the multiple perspectives of others.
This kind of filmmaking requires a kind of humility from the director in not beating us over the head with frantic action or overt symbolism, and trusting in the viewer's patience and sensitivity to themes that need to develop gradually over time. Only when we are attuned to this slower, more careful style of viewing can we then reap the subtle rewards of Johnny Depp's deadpan performance, which actually UNDERSCORES rather than undercuts his inner turmoil, or the barely-perceptible change in Kiki's posture which, more than action or dialogue, tells the true story of her ebbing-and-flowing confidence.
The Fall adds a beautiful, colorful flourish in my mind, to the gallery of films you selected. They are all in their own ways films about VULNERABILITY. The Fall is on another plane aesthetically from the other films, but emphasizes poetically and with colorful bravado the similar notion that, despite our best intentions and our virtually boundless imagination, it is ultimately our limitations (as storytellers, as lovers, as friends), our vulnerabilities which define us and, furthermore, which afford us our greatest and most sublime experience in connecting with others.
Thanks for letting me (re-)experience the joy of these films.
ABOUT DAMN TIME.
Since you watched and appreciated The Fall, I forgive you for taking so long.
To answer your question, I WANT to be a writer, and I take stabs at it here and there. My character flaw is a lack of follow through. I actually work at a preschool in an administrative capacity. And I tend to get sentimental over tiny, inconsequential moments.
I've never noticed the change in Kiki's posture. I might have to revisit the movie now.
Thanks for the assessment! This is officially my favorite new thread.

Absolute Darling

Hi.
Do you mean the Taiwanese drama "Absolute Darling"? Because, I'm sorry, there's no way I'm going to watch an entire drama.
Also, do you mean the Angelina Jolie movie "Wanted" or the Bollywood one with Salman Khan?
Feel free to substitute another movie for "Absolute Darling" though!

Hello Spanish Lady...
Since you did not respond to my polite pm, I thought it best not to bother you. However, I have a lot to tell you based on your movie picks so I hope you find this note!
Revelation number one: You enjoy the company of men. I don't just mean that you are a heterosexual woman. I mean you like being inside the boy's circle, listening to our crude jokes, smoking and drinking through the night. Unlike many women, you appreciate the camaraderie and the special kind of male intimacy portrayed in a movie like Goodfellas with guys and their criminal codes, but still making pasta and eating together while they plot murder. I guess you have brothers, or somehow, your father let you stay up late during his poker nights. This is good. This means you have the advantage of not being surprised at men being men, like so many delicate, sheltered females.
Revelation number two: You also suffer because of number one (above). You suffer because what you see and admire in the best of male intimacy is something so rare and elusive these days: honor and loyalty. Frankly, it is easier for guys to be loyal to other guys than it is for them to be loyal to a woman. That's just the way it is, because we have been trained in sports and warfare and competition and not every guy knows how to open his feelings to a woman, but every guy knows when your buddy calls at 3:47 AM, it's something serious and you don't need a long explanation, you just gotta GO! And you suffer because sometimes being the only woman in a group of men you become the junior "sidekick" and they don't see you as you wish, like a WOMAN. Or the men fight for your attention, acting immature, but in the long run--women come and go--and the men, they go back to each other so there you are alone again. Probably not as tragic as the triangle in A Frozen Flower, but you get the picture.
Revelation number three: You need a guy who can open up a completely new door in your life. Like someone who is a complete genius in an area you know nothing about. Or a guy who can take you to Korea and show you around the countryside, the old parts of Seoul and not just the tourist parts. Do you know how I know this? Because your favorite movies are all recent. Well, 1990 (Goodfellas) is not recent, but you have Mae West and the girl from Our Gang in your profile and yet your favorite movies are male bonding pictures.
Look, we are close in age, and in my opinion you are very lucky to be Spanish. The good thing is that you do not respond to life's hardships by going into some kind of British or Russian shell of cynicism. You still wear nice dresses, you still drink wine, you still dance and fall in love. This is all good. But wine will always be there. Pretty dresses and the tango remain. Don't you want someone to teach you everything about the films of Howard Hawks? Or teach you how to fly a helicopter? Aren't you looking for a guy who will bring the long-term investment of learning a new language or moving to a new city where things are dazzling again?
Maybe I'm talking to myself...
But it's an intoxicating conversation. What do you think?
