make sure you go to bed at exactly the same time and wake up at exactly the same time every day.Make sure your room doesn't get light too early, but that it's light when you're supposed to wake up (drawing heavy curtains can disturb your sleep rythm.)
Try to eliminate stress from your life, especially in the evening. (Don't use your computer before going to sleep, but read a romantic novel etc^^)
Try to exercise a bit everyday, to get yourself tired.
If you worry about something, maybe start a diary, or take some time of the day to talk about it with your friend.
If nothing helps, maybe see a doctor or a pyscologist.
Hope it gets better soon!

Perfect advice, especially with the first part.
Sleep specialists recommend that if you sleep late you should stil wake up at the same time you normally do and you are not allowed to sleep longer on weekends to compensate for getting less sleep during the weekedays.
Our body's sleep cycle is like a clock and if you disrupt it it goes out of sync

The last thing you want to do is to go to a doctor and have him prescribe you sleeping pills.
Thats the temporary way out but once you stop taking the pills it will have a rebound effect where you won't be able fall asleep properly for days as you will feel like your dreaming all the time because your sleep cycle is messed up and your stuck in the REM part when you should be going into the NREM (high quality sleep cycle).

Sleeping hour discipline is the most important factor here and the more you worry about why your not falling asleep the worse it gets so try to focus on something else.
Meditation and breathing exercises while your lying in bed can be useful.

I do recall some research on how the "Big O" helps us fall asleep due to the release of certain neurotransmitters such as serotonin melatonin etc. Your more then welcome to test that theory and let us know!
I'm more interested as to why it causes guys to stop talking and women to get chatty or why we need to light up a cigarette

I suffer from insomnia problems aswell, in which I get up in the early hours of the morning (like 5am) aand get out of bed because I cant get to sleep. Most of my insomnia is caused by anxiety and stress in which I stay up thinking or feel unsettled if I stay in bed too long.

Every night I set a partticular routine which helps my body know its time for me to sleep. This includes 9:30, turn the internet off, brush my teeth, have a drink and go to bed. In that exact order. This helps.
Having a drink before I go to bed, also helps me not to get headaches so I can sleep better.

Because I cant sleep until my mind is at ease, I listen to music which has helped me the most. Ambient and piano stuff is the best. If your still agitated, listen to a couple of linkin park and murderdoll tracks just to get the energy out.

I have an ipod, And keep a folder of ambient sleeping applications on it. I switch them around each night just so that I dont get bored of the same one. But my favourite is an app called 'sleep stream 2' The free version. I just play that and set it for 45 mins so when I wake up, its not still playing. Do you have an iphone/ipod? I highly reccomend this.

Im also claustrophobic so I keep the curtain open a little bit just so that I can see the view outside, without having to have the door open.

Also, writing down a few thoughts in my head just before I sleep helps alot. And also clears my nervous thinking.

Sorry, that was a lot of blah blah blah but if you want some music that will help you sleep just check out the following:

Lifescapes:

Explosions in the sky:

Yiruma:

Port Blue:

Chicane:

PS: if you go to sleep and you're having a lot of dreams, it probably means your not getting good sleep. If you dont have any dreams, then you had a deep sleep.

Oh! and also remember, if your playing with a laptop or ipod of any sort with a bright light on it, ur brain will be like "oh my, theres still light! it must still be daytime! I should get more energy!"

And I just found out this post is really old, 2 years? ah well, anyone else that has insomnia like I do can read this.As long as im helping somebody

nice music. I learned to incorporate insomnia into my regular life. I fall asleep when I am tired enough, and I don't force it. even then I get 3-4 hrs at most.

it can work as an advantage in life.
