If you live in Quebec, yes to some extent. I'm sure most people speak English there, especially in cities like Montreal. Outside Quebec, you don't need to know french at all.

There are places in New Brunswick where French is seen as well. That one was a real surprise when I was on a road trip through there.
French is very nice to know in Canada if you're going for a government job, they have a separate queue openings for bilingual people.

True, forgot about NB, I think they have the largest french speaking population outside of Quebec no?

Hmm, that's a good question. I'm not quite sure these days, Quebec is sandwiched between New Brunswick and Ontario. I saw specific locations in NB that are named in French, but Ontario attracts a lot of people from all over the country too. I'd be lying if I said I knew for certain.

I dunno about you, but I grew up in Canada nearly all my life but I was so shocked about how little I knew of the country outside of Ontario.

New Brunswick is really beautiful. I had a blast driving through the area. Lots of geological related wonders. Also I ended up in a small town who had a beer festival. Even met the couple who ran the event, turns out they have their own LDR romance too. Husband is Canadian, and wife is Ukrainian, they met on his work travels and kept it up, eventually bringing her back. Look at them now. Pillar of their town, running such an awesome event.
