Just finished my shift at the hospital today. It was thirty minutes before the end of the shift and we get a ambulance call for a Code 3 (code 3 is sever and means ambulance use lights and sirens to rush) Stroke of a 83 year old male. So he gets here and we rush him to CT scan and I hold his hand the whole time while he is on the gurney. Doctors do a nuero stroke exam. He gradually get's better. The old man's wife was outside the whole time unknown to the husband. She was 81. When we bring him back to the room he starts crying immediately when he greets his wife and son, who have now entered the room. The nurse and I immediately thought something was wrong he said "i am just happy my family is here", it was actually cries of joy. I didn't realize how scared and alone he was. Before I left he told me how much it meant to him that I held his hand because he thought no one was there for him. He took my hand and said I was going to be a great doctor one day. I thanked him and found out that he was actually a doctor too (oncologist/hematologist).
