So, my question is:
Does the style of email play any part in your desire to respond? If someone messages you on here and doesn't even say hello, they just plough right into "So...", does it rub you the wrong way?
More simply, do you care about HOW someone messages? Or does it not matter at all?

Personally, I try to be polite and often wish you a nice day / evening at the end ...
All in all, I can say that it is important to me personally that someone behaves politely. and speaks to me normally....

I've been guilty of omitting the greeting and just going straight to a question or statement. I used to make more of an effort to write a proper email, but since 90% of the time I don't receive anything back, I stopped trying.

Having spent a lifetime online, personally 'hi' is the most boring conversation starter I've ever come across. I also use another site , where the traffic is .... immense, and I honestly don't even look at the messages that just says 'hi' or 'hey' or anything of the likes. I don't even know what to answer to such a message. I once actually replied with a 'hi' back to a 'hi', and he never sent me another message again. SO, in other words, a 'hi' message is already over for me. No point trying to respond. Also, like. If you really want to talk to the other person, shouldn't you at least seem a BIT interested? No matter if you expect nothing back? I mean, I've messaged tons of people on this site without a reply as well, but at least TRY to make yourself a little bit more than 'I don't know what to say' kind of person. But that's just my personal opinion.
PS. also. 'hi how are you?'

second worst topic starter. These conversations usually don't last long.
Example:
1st: Hello, how are you?
2nd: I'm good thanks. you?
1st: that's good. I'm cool
NOW WHAT???? You're back to the BEGINNING AGAIN. yes, just .....no matter how many times people reply. Try to be creative xD

oh I agree. getting a message or two asking if you're single, where I'm from etc when it's ALL in the profile. Well, that person clearly isn't THAT interested xD

I find even if you list preferences on a profile very clearly, a lot of people will disregard them completely.

Also, If the person in question is looking for dates and you are writing from across the world hoping for a pen pal, then it's probably not going to work out.
And if everything else fails, always remember:
