I think referring to the profile or a forum post is the best...
my top 7 (so far)
1. that's a gorgeous hoodie you have...
2. I would write you even if you dont have a profile pic (referring to my bubble)
3. I am ready to be bitten
4. So why'd you delete your old account
5. So you want to be a digital nomad?
6. you look lost reading the map...I would definitely not trust you exploring Rome...(referring to a picture)
7. you look better than dua lipa (I was like...dua who? hahaha...had to look her up)

haha.. but I would also answer a 'hi' (because I am nice...Karma and so on..haha)...but those conversations usually don't last very long

Problem is...I don't look like her (in my opinion) and I certainly do not look better than her...but it made me smile and blush..which is always a good start...haha;-)

I don't really mind if the messages start with hi or hello as long the rest is interesting enough. While I have to agree with the fact that the conversations which start with "hi/hello how r u?" die pretty fast- sometimes its just people testing the waters to see if they gonna get a reply.

I think there's nothing wrong with saying hi and asking how someone is doing, but try to make the message more meaningful. Bonus points if they bother to read my profile beforehand.

I read their profile before responding to just a “hi” because I may see something we have in common. I try not to be dismissive of short messages. When I was registered on other sites and got the inevitable “asl?” message, I just ignored it. Obviously I’m female. Obviously my age and location are in my profile. Really?

No, it doesn't matter if all they wrote was "Hi" or a paragraph introduction.
Why? Because none of those guarantee a message back.

I'm going to go on a limb and be the first to say even if you wrote a sentence about my profile or in a message, chances are still 50-50 about getting a reply. The same if all you wrote to me was a "Hi/How are you?"

Other people may have social anxiety and a "Hi" is all they can conjure. As others have mentioned, people may be testing the waters. Everything may be different once you get to that second sentence in a conversation.
Alot of people I've met on Hey-Ai stemming to real life meet ups are socially different from their online personas, some of those are my closest friends now.

These can be some of the best people you'll never meet.

This wasn’t exactly encouraging, but I get your point.

If it is just about testing the waters, I agree to a degree. Especially in online dating, physical appearance plays a huge part. So if you just send a simple hi and the person in question responds, it is likely that he or she finds you at least not too shabby (or they are just super bored). So it is a super low investment to get a first reaction.

However, I don't recommend it. As they say, you don't get a second chance to make a first impression. And the chance to get a reply is much higher if you can say something more interesting than a simple hi.
