I didn't know people want to get married so badly! Who have you been talking to? There are just as many reasons to get married as there are to avoid marriage! It should be an individual thing!

Some people wanna spend the rest of their lives together and so they decide to get married! Others are forced into it!

Statistically speaking, 100% of divorced people were once married!

As for my thoughts on marriage.
- its a public declaration in front of your friends and family, and a statement to the world that two people have chosen to be with each other exclusively, "forsaking all others". But that only works if you actually take your vows seriously.
- there are still unions made for financial and political reasons. When I was still a full time student, I heard about two people getting married because they would get more Austudy (student benefits) as a married couple than as two individuals. whereas in other parts of the world, if the father owes money, he will just "sell" off his young daughter to the creditor as a "wife" to settle the debt.
- some marry a rich person because they never want to work. Come to think of it there are a few cases of this - dude marries a rich girl, or any girl and takes out life insurance policy, kills her, cashes in. The way laws are, you need to be a legally recognised spouse to get their stuff - ie marriage certificate. And how many times do you see on tv an old man with a sawdust-for-brains-20-year-old wife???? the only part of their brain that isn't sawdust is the money sniffing part.

I personally do not approve of people who get married "because it was the next logical step to take in our relationship". Or those who fake a pregnancy to trick the guy into marrying them.

Also, if you just want a special day where you can dress up and be the centre of attention, just throw a theme party.

Marriage is definitely more than a piece of paper-- the life my parents have built together over the last 28+ years can hardly be summed up by a state marriage license. Has it been all good, like a "happily ever after fairy-tale?" Of course not, that's a stupid assumption. Has it been terrible enough to call it quits? Nope-- they've worker together through good and bad, made the best out of the worst, through sickness and health, for rich or for poor... well you get the idea ;) On the contrary, I've seen several LTRs between people who were not married fall apart as well.

It takes work; and its much more a commitment and a lifestyle than it is a piece of paper. It's a mindset that may not suit well with all the youngsters, but I want to get married because I genuinely want to live that mindset and make that ultimate commitment one day, and I don't feel that a cohabitation/permanent LTR is exactly the right way to go about it (for me, at least).
