Church burning was actually common activities during the 90's in black metal scene. There were black metal circle who was trying to persuade other black metallers how "extreme" they are. While it was accused of being conspiracy of "satanic movement" by the mainstream media, it was supposed to be more of "symbolic revenge" against Christianity for its destruction of Europe's pagan past.

This is good documentary on the origin of 90's black metal.

I've read somewhere, that Varg was/is a follower of Hitler's ideology, so no wonder about his Hitler features. :3

Yeah I think since Christianity is way stronger in Europe compared to the States, it might be the reason why there are more black metal bands out there.

It is not, fortunately LOL. Well, there are many sub-genres in metal, black metal is one of them. The make-up itself is called corpse paint. Corpse paint used mainly by black metal bands during live concerts and photo shoots. The makeup is used to make the musicians appear inhuman, corpse-like, or demonic. Theme for most black metal bands is usually satanic/anti-christ. So it is their costume while they're 'preaching'. Just like a priest with his uniform I would say. Or even just like Lady Gaga with her bizarre costumes.
