Yes and No. It's not as simple as locking someone down merely to not be alone.

I think marriage and divorce has become a business for decades now. Too often have we all seen people get married quickly only to divorce because they didn't take it slow to understand each other.

In short, yes marriage can be an important milestone but not in the legal sense. Children in my opinion is a celebration of the relationship. People pop out children like it's the thing to do but it should be treated as a byproduct of a successful relationship, not a crutch or trap. Also, a successful relationship doesn't necessarily include children - the focus is how harmonious two people are.

it's important to understand what marriage brings that a exclusive committed relationship cannot. the answer you'll find is mostly legal, and thus financial obligations.

so the question becomes if it's better to entrap two people in an arrangement to create a high barrier to exit, when faced with difficult situations OR relax the reins and have them weather difficult situations solely under their love, respect, and care for each other.

marriage is still symbolically important, but it's functional mechanics are more of a thing of the past*.

*gets more complex, still functionally important within socioeconomic today but less imperative.

so for me, as with all complex questions, the answer is yes and no

Yes it is important for me to one-day marry someone who I had a close bond with not only emotionally, physically but spiritually. Also to build a family with my future husband's surname.

Marriage is important to me personally because I would never want to spend my life with someone who couldn't promise to be in it for the long haul, and the promise might as well be official.

Since when marriage is to tie a person to be sure that their life will be yours for all eternity?
